The largest shipping companies in the Pitiusas are committed to the environment. Balearia, Trasmapi and Mediterranea Pitiusa have opted for sustainability and respect for the environment, with the aim of protecting the surroundings that surround us. From 2018 onwards, they have begun to use more ecological and sustainable vessels, pioneering projects have been launched to separate and recycle waste, plastic containers, cans, bricks, paper and cardboard generated on the ferries, and to lead collection campaigns both on beaches and in seabeds. These initiatives also arise to make known the fragility of our maritime environment in the islands of Ibiza and Formentera. Many companies that collaborate with the shipping companies want to strive to promote and contribute to the protection of biodiversity and the marine ecosystem, especially in the Posidonia oceanica meadow, through dissemination and awareness-raising projects aimed at all audiences. In recent years, projects focused on the defense of our environmental heritage have been developed; one of these programs is the analysis of the presence of microplastics on the beaches of Ibiza and Formentera, with the aim of raising awareness among the population about the need to reduce this type of waste.
