The lovers of Formentera and its nature are in luck, because this wonderful island joins the list of benchmarks in environmental preservation in Spain. In 1999 Formentera won the title awarded by Unesco of World Heritage thanks to its posidonia meadows, which keep its sea so crystal clear and beautiful, as we know it. Being a delicate space and at the same time attracting a lot of tourism, the Government of the Balearic Islands has developed various projects that contribute to preserving the harmony between human beings and nature. These projects aim to protect and preserve the natural environment and at the same time also enhance the tourist offer of the islands. One of these projects is the creation of the underwater Atlas of the mapping of Posidonia oceanica. This mapping makes it possible to know where the posidonia is located and to know where boats can anchor and where they cannot. Formentera is also a highly regarded area for birdwatching, especially in the Estany des Peix area. Up to 300 species can be spotted in the Balearic Islands. The Alas del Mar project is aimed at the protection and recovery of seabirds that are in danger of extinction. Other projects, no less important, are the conservation and recovery of species such as the sperm whale, the ray and angel sharks and the sea turtles that in recent years have once again chosen these islands for their spawning. As for tourism, Formentera has decided to regulate the entry of vehicles so that it does not exceed the limit set by the Island Council, for this reason, during the summer months (July and August), if you wish to travel to Formentera with a vehicle you must book a space and pay the symbolic tax of 1 euro per car and 0.50 per motorcycle. The circulation of quads, caravans and motorhomes is not allowed. The use of electric motorcycles, bikes and cars and their respective charging points, which today are already 12, is also being promoted. In addition, for 2021, the following challenges have been established: -work towards the implementation of zero waste in Formentera, eradicating disposable plastics and opting to create a deposit, return and refund system, a pioneer in Spain. -promote the use of renewable energies in tourist businesses and homes. -promote the use of non-polluting means of transport. -regulate the flow of visitors and the maritime traffic of regular lines, with special care to control the problem of uncontrolled anchoring on the island’s coastline.
